Paper and card recycling service

We introduced a trial paper and card recycling service from February 2019 to March 2021 for approximately 1000 properties in the Deckham and Low Fell area. The trial hoped to increase the amount of paper and cardboard being recycled.

The trial analysis indicated that:

  • around 99% of paper and card was being recycled separately in the new bin.
  • the recycling rates for paper and card have dramatically increased compared to previous rates using the inner caddy of the blue recycling bin.
  • the recycling rate from the trial area has increased as the quality of the paper and card has improved as contamination has been minimal.
  • by improving the quality of the paper and cardboard the contractor found a more sustainable market for the material.

A resident survey indicated that 87% of residents would recommend the service to family and friends.

Next steps

These results are very positive, and the system has been so successful we will continue with this collection system in this area for the foreseeable future.

We'll be considering future recycling collection systems across the whole of the borough.

We should have more details on this soon including what impact this could have on collection services.

In the meantime, we will continue to assess this new collection service to help us determine the most effective long-term sustainable collection system for all households in the borough.
