Red Box Project

Red Box project

The Red Box Project is a national community-based initiative which aims to support young girls throughout their periods by providing red boxes filled with sanitary items, tights, and pants to local schools.

It was set up in response to the realisation that young girls are missing school classes when unable to afford sanitary products, meaning additional school absence and lower educational attainment due to period poverty. We feel no girl should miss school due to her period.

The Red Box Project is now in Gateshead, led by the Neighbourhood Management and Volunteering Team. The project is based on community kindness - items are currently being collected before being sorted into red plastic boxes filled with towels, tampons, pants, tights and plain paper bags, and donated to schools across Gateshead for young girls to use free of charge. The idea is that these items are not just for emergency use, but provide enough to get girls through their whole period.

We would very much appreciate donations of:

  • sanitary items
  • pants - age nine upwards and adult sizes 6 to 22
  • tights - black and 70+ denier, age nine upwards and adult sizes 6 to 22
