About the route

This route starts at Longacre Woods in Birtley and finishes at the Angel of the North sculpture. The route is about two and a half miles.

Begin the route at the Lamesley Road entrance and head through the woods following the path. Exit at Longacre Woods, Smithy Lane entrance. Head along Smithy Lane and over the A1 Bridge. Cut back into the woodland in the gap on Smithy Lane. Follow the path, head up the hill and you will have reached the Angel of the North where you can admire the sculpture, enjoy a picnic or play sports on the football field.

The route has narrow paths and the ground is bumpy with a few slopes so is suitable for walkers and cyclists but not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. This route can be done in reverse, starting at the Angel of the North and finishing at the Lamesley Road entrance of Longacre Woods.

How to get there

Buses run regularly to Birtley and to the Angel of the North from Gateshead Interchange. Longacre Woods is a short walk from Durham Road in Birtley. Check www.gonortheast.co.uk (opens new window) for bus timetables.
