AJ Bell Tour of Britain - arrangements confirmed for Angel of the North finish

Tour of Britain - Angel

Excitement is building ahead of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain racing into Gateshead next month. We have been working with organisers of the Tour of Britain to put arrangements in place for the Stage Six finish at the Angel of the North on Friday 10 September.

It will mark the fourth time that Gateshead has featured on the route of Britain's biggest professional cycle race and the first time that the borough has held a finish of the race since 2009.

The stage finish, from Carlisle in Cumbria, to Gateshead will see the A167 Durham Road closed in both directions for up to six hours, with a longer closure southbound to accommodate the tour's extensive event set up around the finish line.

Spectators are encouraged to watch the race at any point along the route, providing they do so safely. This includes not impeding the competitors in any way, including entering the road as they approach and pass. Spectators should be aware of the event timings and plan to arrive and be in position well in advance of the race entering Gateshead.

Those wishing to witness the thrilling sprint finish at the Angel of the North should use public transport, as there will be no access to cars and no parking available near to the site.

A full road closure will be in place on the northbound carriageway of the A167 from J66 on the A1 to the end of Cowen Gardens from 4am-9pm (latest) on Friday 10 September.

The southbound carriageway will also be closed between 12pm-6pm (latest).

Diversion routes are being agreed with public transport operators.

Motorists will be warned of the road closure well in advance with diversions signposted.

Arrangements have been made for residents and businesses near the Angel of the North to access their properties whilst the road closure is in place.

The council has been liaising with neighbouring local authorities and transport operators to ensure the road closure is advertised in advance.

The AJ Bell Tour of Britain is scheduled to take place between Sunday 5 and Sunday 12 September, starting at Penzance in Cornwall and finishing in Aberdeen. This year's race takes place following the cancellation of the 2020 event because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Further details of the arrangements for hosting the Tour of Britain, including bus diversions, timings and spectator information, are available on our website at Tour of Britain - Gateshead Council
