Gateshead's inaugural History Festival

Sally Becker event

Humanitarian Sally Becker is coming to Gateshead Central Library on Friday 17th September as part of Gateshead's inaugural History Festival.

Sally has spent the past 28 years helping innocent victims of war. She became known as 'The Angel of Mostar' after she evacuated injured children and their families from the besieged city in Bosnia in 1993. Amidst the carnage and the chaos, she managed to negotiate ceasefires in areas where others had failed and is credited with saving hundreds of lives. She has been helping injured children and rallying support for those in crisis ever since. Sally will share her experiences of the evacuations in this engaging and powerful presentation.

Sally is currently planning to provide support for clinicians in Afghanistan by connecting them to our paediatric network via SaveAChild.uk, a mobile app that she has developed to help save the lives of sick and injured children across the globe.

Councillor Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said "We're delighted that Sally is able to join us for our first Gateshead History Festival. She is a passionate advocate for those who have been affected by war and, sadly, the timing of this event is very relevant due to the ongoing events in Afghanistan. I would encourage people to book their tickets as this promises to be a fascinating insight into Sally's life."

Gateshead History Festival 9-23 September, set up by Gateshead Council with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and run in partnership with GemArts, celebrates world, UK and local history. The theme for this years event is Untold Stories', which reflects the work of Gateshead Archive over the past two years to identify new stories and voices from the collections.

Tickets can be booked online or call 0191 433 8420.
