Improvements to Gateshead town centre traffic management
Construction work to begin on improvements to some key road junctions in Gateshead town centre.
Two junctions will see the existing lanes slightly widened, and two roundabouts will see dedicated, segregated lanes added for left turns, to improve the flow of vehicles.
We will also be introducing some replacement signage to help guide road users, and new road markings will help direct which lane to use for different destinations.
Key changes:
- A dedicated lane for traffic turning left from West Central Route into Regent Street
- Two lanes to accommodate traffic between West Central Route and Park Lane roundabout
- Amending and improving the junction between Charles Street and High West Street
- Amending and improving the junction between Charles Street, Park Lane and High Street, to improve safety and allow space for two lanes of traffic.
- A dedicated lane for traffic turning left from Gateshead Highway Southbound towards the A184 Felling Bypass
- A new box junction on the West Central Route to help give priority to buses leaving Gateshead Interchange
- Amendments to the road markings on the roundabouts and their approaches to improve lane discipline
As the affected roads are in our town centre, with significant volumes of traffic at peak times, we are going to install the improvements late in the evening and over night.
We will ensure lanes are kept open at peak times, to minimise any potential congestion.
A small piece of enabling work will take place this Sunday, 9 January, followed by daytime work outside of the main carriageway from Monday, 10 January. Works on the carriageway will begin on the evening of Monday 17 January.
We expect the whole programme to take a number of weeks to complete, finishing by the end of March. We will minimise disruption to local residents and other road users wherever possible.
We are sorry for the noise and disruption this will cause to local residents. We hope you will understand that we are investing in this project to help ease traffic flows and improve the area for the longer term.
We recognise that as we have implemented changes to the road network over the last 18 months, especially in the area close to the Tyne Bridge, this has had an impact on traffic circulation.
To help us prioritise public transport, walking and cycling, we have asked motorists to sometimes take different routes than previously, and we are now making adjustments to help traffic flow more easily on those routes.
Our teams are finalising the programme of work required to install these improvements.
