Gateshead welcomes Kids Go Free special offer

Children travel free on buses in the North East this Easter.

Bus companies have agreed that every fare paying customer can take up to three children aged 11 and under on all bus services, all day, every day until Saturday 7 May.

As the Metro and Shields Ferry already operate this policy, that means all buses and Metro services in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham are free for children travelling with a paying adult.

The new deal will help families enjoy cheap days out - and help cut the number of car journeys to help the environment too.

Anneliese Hutchinson, Gateshead Council's service director for development, transport and public protection, said: "This is a really welcome commitment from the bus companies. It shows what can be achieved by close partnership working, all focusing on increasing passenger numbers on low carbon public transport.

"Making family trips out affordable is good for people's wellbeing, good for those struggling with the cost of living, and also good for the environment by encouraging modal shift to see fewer car journeys on our roads."

Tobyn Hughes, Managing Director of Transport North East, said: "We're working in partnership with the bus operators and Nexus to make public transport cheaper, easier and greener - by far the best way to travel around our amazing region.

"It's great news that our region's bus companies are expanding this great value offer, already available on the Metro and the Shields Ferry, to include buses.

"People travelling with children can enjoy great value travel on public transport across Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham. If you're travelling by any combination of bus, Metro and the Shields Ferry, each fare-paying adult can bring along up to three children aged 11 and under for free.

"This offer will help families to get out and about on public transport more affordably over the Easter break, enjoying our fantastic region whilst maintaining a low carbon footprint."
