Further support for Armed Forces Community

Armed forces outreach service - we're here to help

The partnership between our Armed Forces Outreach Service and Walking With the Wounded has been further strengthened following the appointment of a new care co-ordinator.

Following a successful joint bid for funding, allocated by the Armed Forces Covenant, Susanna Duffy has taken up the new role which will help to ensure that the Armed Forces Community are now able to access direct support and advice on employment, training and education in addition to all of the other direct support and advice provided by the service. This will significantly improve the offer of support to the Armed Forces Community approaching Gateshead Council, Newcastle City Council, Your Homes Newcastle, Durham County Council and Believe Housing.

Councillor Stuart Green, Gateshead Council's Armed Forces Champion, said "This is a really important step forward for AFOS as Susie's role will not only help us to build a comprehensive database of the support available but, by walking more closely with Walking With the Wounded, we will continue to improve our referral pathway. We're incredibly proud of the support that we give to our Armed Forces Community but we want this to develop further and grow to ensure we can give the help needed to as many people as possible."

AFOS provides support to members of the Armed Forces, including reservists and family members of these groups, across Gateshead, Newcastle and  Durham. Advice and guidance is given in relation to housing, debt advice, rent/council tax arrears, training/employment, mental health and wellbeing and securing funding for white goods/essential home furnishings.
