Gateshead History Festival returns for 2022
Gateshead Archive's second annual celebration of local, UK and world history begins this month, bringing together workshops, talks, walks and other events on the theme of identity and culture. The festival begins on Monday 26 September, with events running across Gateshead until Friday 14 October.
A wide variety of guest speakers including authors, historians and cultural experts are lined up. Together with Gateshead Archive team members, they will discuss sport, the British home and the impact of Empire, as well as the connection between our local communities and people and places across the world.

A series of guided group walks will highlight the landmarks, buildings and people that signify the heritage of areas including Birtley, Blaydon, Chopwell, Ryton, Whickham and the Quayside. The Gateshead Archive team will also be showcasing their facilities and how they can help anyone with an interest in local heritage, with events including tours of the Gateshead Archive and family history surgeries for beginners.
Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: "The first Gateshead History Festival was a huge success and I'm thrilled that we're able to bring it back for 2022 with such a varied programme of events. There really is something for everyone and the events are taking place at venues across the borough. The libraries team will also be taking the festival into local primary schools.
It's an opportunity for our communities to come together, learn something new and celebrate our heritage."
Tickets for events can be booked online at gatesheadlibraries.eventbrite.com or by calling Gateshead Central Library on 0191 433 8420. Concessions are available to students and people receiving benefits for most events.
