Begin your fostering journey with Gateshead this Christmas

FOSTERING CHRISTMAS

In Gateshead, there are more children and young people than ever looking for a foster family. This Christmas, find out more about how you can begin your fostering journey with us.

Since 2020, the number of children cared for by Gateshead Council has increased by over 10% and there are over 108,000 children in the care system nationwide today.

As part of this year's Christmas campaign, we are keen to hear from anyone who would like to begin their fostering journey in time for the new year.

There is no such thing as a typical foster carer. Our community of foster carers come from all walks of life, backgrounds and careers.

Anyone over the age of 21 who is fit and healthy enough to care for a child and has a spare room can find out more about becoming a foster carer. Those eligible will receive a weekly payment, ranging from £100 to £440 per child, depending on the skills, knowledge and experience offered.

Andrea Houlahan, Deputy Strategic Director for Children's Social Care and Early Help at Gateshead Council, said: " It's never been a better time to begin your journey to become a foster carer with Gateshead, as it launches a new foster carer model and has more support on offer than ever before.

"Now more than ever, we are keen to hear from anyone who believes they have what it takes to be a carer. You may be a total beginner and know very little about foster care, but with the support of our Gateshead fostering community, you will feel part of the family right away and ready to begin your journey.

"If you think you've got the qualities to become a foster carer and want to support young people in our communities, take the first step this Christmas."

Councillor Haley, cabinet member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council, said: "Our fostering community does amazing work for children and young people in our area, all year round.

"We're inspired by them each and every day, and we see 'all the small things' they do for young people to thrive. We're sure that they can inspire those who are interested in beginning their fostering journey this Christmas, too."
