SEND strategy consultation launches in Gateshead

SEND CONSULTATION OPENS 2023

Gateshead Council and NHS North East North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (NENC ICB) have launched a consultation on how to strengthen support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the area.

The Council, NENC ICB and its key partners are seeking views on its draft Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Strategy which sets out Gateshead's local area vision, aspiration and priorities for developing our support and provision for children and young people with SEND and their families.

Take part in the consultation

The aim of the strategy is to improve outcomes for families and help raise the achievement of children and young people, aged 0-25 with special educational needs and disabilities so that they can fulfil their potential and live happy and fulfilling lives.

The draft strategy outlines the key priorities for the partnership across Gateshead, including social care, education and health services.

Councillor Gary Haley, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council, said:"We're ambitious for our young people with SEND to reach their full potential and we want to make Gateshead a place where children and young people and their families feel included and can thrive.

"Inclusion underpins our core purpose, and we are committed to giving children and young people the best start in life. We want our children and young people to develop their independence and to become confident adults leading productive lives.

"Supporting children with SEND is everyone's business. By taking the time to read our draft strategy and completing the consultation, you will help us to improve our offer for children and young people with special educational need and disabilities, their families, and our wider communities across Gateshead."

Richard Scott, Director of Nursing, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) said: "Children and Young People are at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to supporting children to have the best start in life, with a focus on the first 1001 critical days. We want all of our children and young people to achieve well in their early years, as well as throughout school and college, and to make a good transition into adulthood, to lead contented and fulfilled lives, including those with special education needs and disabilities (SEND).

"Therefore, we are calling on children and young people with SEND and their families, to share their views on the services we provide to help them, to help tell us what we are doing right and where we need to make changes to make our services better."

Please read the draft SEND strategy document and then share your views by answering the questions in the consultation.
