Elections get underway in Gateshead
Gateshead residents will go to the polls on Thursday 4 May for this year's local elections.
Elections will take place in all 22 wards, with residents able to vote for one councillor to represent your views in decisions taken about the borough and their local community. The election of councillors to Lamesley Parish will also take place in that ward on the same day.
Once elected each councillor serves a four year term. Councillors are unpaid but they receive an allowance to cover any loss of income or costs incurred during the course of their duties. Anyone can stand in an election, as long as they meet the criteria, and the deadline for new candidates to submit their nomination is Tuesday 4 April.

Over the next week poll cards will be dropping through your letterbox and will show where you will be able to vote and whether you have a postal vote. If you have not received a poll card by 3 April please contact our elections team on 0191 433 7001 as it could mean you are not registered to vote.
There are three ways to vote in the upcoming local elections, but you must be registered to vote by Monday 17 April for all of them:
- vote in person at your identified polling station - for the first time you must have photo ID to be able to vote in person and will not be given a ballot paper without it. If you do not have an accepted form of photo ID you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate by 5pm on Tuesday 25 April.
- apply for a postal vote, applications must be received by 5pm, Tuesday 18 April
- apply for a proxy vote - if you're unable to go to the polling station and would like someone to vote on your behalf, applications must be received by Tuesday 25 April
