Divest Tyne & Wear campaigning

Campaigners from Divest Tyne & Wear gathered at the Civic Centre this morning as part of their regionwide Day of Action.
They were present to thank the council for making a cross-party call to Tyne & Wear Pension Fund to review its investment policies - especially investments in fossil fuel companies planning to increase extraction of fossil fuels.
Divest Tyne & Wear is calling for £238 million invested in oil, gas and coal by the Tyne & Wear Pension Fund to be switched to funds linked to green jobs and sustainable services.
Local campaigners have planned a series of rallies in Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland.
Climate groups from around the North East were represented at the rally in Gateshead.
In November last year, Gateshead councillors passed a motion which committed the council to:
• Re-state a commitment to becoming fully carbon neutral by 2030
• Write to TWLGPS and to Border to Coast Pension Partnership (their pooling organisation) to ask them to review their investments in fossil fuels, taking into account the latest findings of the International Institute of Sustainable Development, which confirms that no new oil and gas fields must be opened from now, if the earth's temperature is to be kept below 1.5 degrees C.
• Ask TWLGPS and BCPP to actively invest in companies that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimise climate risk.
