The popular Keelman's Way foot and cycle path on the south bank of the River Tyne is reopening (Friday 31 March 2023) following a project to protect the nearby railway line from erosion by the river.
The Tyne had eroded the foot and cycle path next to the tracks, so Network Rail has invested over £3m in repairs and putting defensive measures in place, to protect its asset.
This work included installing rock armour and reinstating the slope along the river. This will help make sure further erosion does not affect the route between Wylam and Clara Vale.
Colin Swinney, service director for highways and waste, said:
"The Keelman's Way path had to be closed while Network Rail completed some important work to protect the Newcastle-Carlisle line.
"Now that work is complete, the railway is secured, and this very popular path can be re-opened.
"It's not only very well used by local residents, but also forms an important part of the National Cycle Network, route number 141."
