It's never been a better time to foster with Gateshead
The offer for foster carers has never been better at Gateshead Council. With new support, more benefits and an improved events programme for carers, the council is keen to hear from anyone who is considering fostering as part of this year's Foster Care Fortnight campaign (15-28 May).
While there are some essential requirements for all foster carers, not one is the same. Gateshead's community of foster carers come from all walks of life, backgrounds and careers, but all prioritise the love and care of children and young people in the area.
Anyone over the age of 21 living within a 20-mile radius of Gateshead with a spare room can find out more about becoming a foster carer with Gateshead. Those eligible will receive a weekly payment ranging from £100 to over £450 per child, depending on skills, knowledge, experience and the type of placement offered. In addition, Gateshead's foster carers can also access the council's staff discount scheme, with discounts ranging from cheaper weekly food shop to entertainment, travel and holidays.
Andrea Houlahan, Deputy Strategic Director for Children's Social Care and Early Help at Gateshead Council, said: "We cannot be more grateful for our amazing community of carers in Gateshead, who provide our children and young people with safe, loving homes.
"That's why we're always striving to improve our offer with carers, including access to our Mockingbird Hub and community support, as well as discount schemes and staff benefits as employees of the council.
"While we continue working on improving our offer for carers, it's never been better than it has been right now. If you have ever considered fostering, now is the best time to join us and welcome a child or young person into your home, offering them the best chance to thrive."
Councillor Haley, cabinet member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council, said: "Every year, Foster Care Fortnight is our opportunity to thank our fostering community for the wonderful care they provide all year around.
"As part of our celebrations, we hold a Fostering Awards ceremony, which is one of our favourite nights of the year. By joining us as a foster carer, you will benefit from this heart-warming event, among others throughout the year and feel part of our family immediately."
By choosing to foster with Gateshead, you will be supported every step of the way. If you think you've got the qualities to become part of our fostering community, take the opportunity to take the first step during Foster Care Fortnight.
