Honour for former councillors

Gateshead has honoured eleven former councillors who have dedicated almost 200 years of service to their local community and the borough.

During the Annual Council meeting, which took place in the Council Chamber, Gateshead Civic Centre, the title of Honorary Alderman/Woman was conferred on the following:

• Christine Bradley (Lamesley Ward, 2007-2019)
• Marilyn Charlton (Winlaton and High Spen Ward, 2010-2022)
• Susan Craig (Low Fell Ward, 2008-2022)
• Malcolm Graham (High Fell Ward, 1988-2019)
• Mick Henry CBE (Saltwell Ward,1986-2019)
• Michael Hood (Lamesley Ward, 2008-2021)
• Jean Lee (High Fell Ward, 2004-2021)
• John McClurey (Whickham South and Sunniside Ward, 2008-2021)
• Robin Stanaway (Pelaw and Heworth Ward, 2000-2010)
• Neil Weatherley (Birtley Ward,1998-2019)
• Anne Wheeler (Pelaw and Heworth Ward, 2010 - 2018 and Wardley and Leam Lane Ward, 2018-2022)

Leader of the Council, Councillor Martin Gannon, said "Councillors play a crucial role in representing people across Gateshead and it's important to recognise the time and commitment that is required to fulfil this role. All of the Aldermen/women honoured today have dedicated a huge amount of their time not only to our council but to their local community and we are proud to recognise their work with one of the highest honours we can bestow."

The title of Alderman/woman is awarded to former councillors for their outstanding service to the Council.
