A variety of exciting jobs are on offer at the state-of-the-art social care facility to support older people in Gateshead to live more independent lives.

Construction work is soon to be completed on the Sister Winifred Laver Promoting Independence Centre, which is due to open in Felling this September. The provision will offer short-term care for adults, either leaving hospital or admitted from the local community, to help them regain the skills and confidence needed to live independently in their own homes.

The 60-bed centre will provide 24 hour, seven days a week specialised care and will replace the current Promoting Independence Centres in the borough (Eastwood and Southernwood) to become the only facility of its type in Gateshead, with both council staff and NHS colleagues supporting service users.

Named in honour of Sister Winifred Laver, a nurse and Methodist Deaconess who dedicated her life to improving the lives of the Gateshead community, the council hopes to inspire more people to become part of the team who will care for its service users.

Councillor Michael McNestry, cabinet member for Adult Social Care, said: "Gateshead's new promoting independence centre will be a state-of-the-art facility with innovative new technology that offers a unique style of care provision.

"We hope that our residents are inspired by Sister Winifred Laver's story, whose work and history strongly reflects the council's aims of supporting our communities to live independent, thriving lives and come forward to find out more about the roles on offer."

Steph Downey, Service Director, Adult Social Care, Integrated Adults and Social Care Services at Gateshead Council, said: "The roles at our new promoting independence centre are a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in supporting our communities to thrive.

"It is an exciting time to join the team ahead of the new centre opening its doors. Those looking for a meaningful new role will have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technology as well as benefit from our dedication to providing development opportunities for our staff across the service.

"Gateshead is a fantastic place to work, and we couldn't be prouder of our offer that allows for flexible working hours and career progression through gaining qualifications on the job."

To find out more about the roles on offer, anyone over the age of 18 can attend the recruitment event on Wednesday 5 July 2023 at Felling Community Centre, NE10 0NF from 11am until 3pm then 5pm until 7pm.

Potential candidates will be able to meet the team, ask them questions and even have an interview to take the first step towards a new career at the centre.
