Gateshead selected to trial innovative pilot to reduce family breakdowns

Family

Gateshead will be one of just four local authorities from across the country to take part in the first wave of a new government pilot which aims to reduce family breakdowns.

In February this year, the Government published its implementation strategy and consultation, 'Stable Homes, Built on Love'. It sets out a once-in-a-generation, system-wide, transformation programme for children's social care.

Part of this strategy includes the introduction of the Family Network Pilot, which is a Department for Education initiative that seeks to build on local authorities existing support for families at risk of breakdown.

The Family Network Pilot will introduce Family Network Support Packages, which aim to provide support for children to stay safely at home, through financial and other practical means.

Councillor Gary Haley, cabinet member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council, said: "We are incredibly proud to have been selected as one of just four local authorities in the first wave of the new Family Network Pilot.

"Being selected to drive the pilot is recognition of the amazing support our teams across children's services provide to families in Gateshead - from offering a range of groups and services at our Family Hubs to the critical work of our Youth Justice Service.

"The Family Network Pilot will further enhance our offer for some of our most vulnerable families at risk of breakdown by being able to provide what could potentially be life-changing support to stay together."

The Family Network Pilot will commence this summer and a steering group has already been established to drive the pilot and provide oversight and scrutiny.
