Travel advice during public transport strikes
On Saturday 30th September and Wednesday 4 October, both Go North East buses and Northern Rail trains will be affected by strike action.
The strike at Go North East lasts all week, Saturday to Friday, but will be especially disruptive when local trains are also cancelled.
Bus depots affected by the strike action are Consett, Gateshead, Hexham, Percy Main/North Shields, Sunderland and Washington. This means it's likely most Go North East bus services will not operate.
Strike action at Northern rail means no local train services will be running. That includes the line along the Tyne Valley, and stopping services running through Northumberland up to Alnwick, through County Durham and down the coast towards Middlesbrough.
As a result of the strike action, Metro services are likely to be extremely busy as bus and rail customers look for alternative transport options.
If you are attending football matches at St. James' Park (Saturday 3pm and Wednesday 8pm) or at the Stadium of Light (Wednesday 745pm), please plan your travel ahead, allow additional time for your journey and if you're able, consider walking where possible.
If you're not going to either football game, avoid the crowds by not travelling at this time, wherever possible.
