Gateshead Organisations Nominated for National Sustainable Travel Awards

Pupils from St Joseph's Primary School during TravelWise Week 2023

Gateshead Council and St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Blaydon have both been nominated for national awards for our efforts to promote greener methods of transport.

The Team Modeshift National Sustainable Travel Awards 2023 - organised by the UK's leading sustainable travel organisation, Modeshift - recognise organisations who've made outstanding contributions to increasing levels of sustainable and active travel.

Gateshead Council and our partner Living Streets have been nominated in the 'Education Engagement Project of the Year' category for our collaboration on 'Be Cool Birtley'.

Be Cool Birtley brought together children from five schools around Birtley - Ravensworth Primary, Portobello Primary, St Joseph's Juniors, Birtley East Community Primary and Barley Mow Primary - to compete in a 'Walk of Fame' to see who could increase the number of people walking, cycling and scooting to school, and encourage more parents to park away from school to 'park and stride'.

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School have separately been nominated in the 'Best TravelWise Week Campaign - School' category for their efforts during TravelWise Week, a seven-day travel challenge where Modeshift asks everyone to ditch the car in favour of greener means of getting from A to B.

To mark this year's campaign which ran from 16-22 September 2023, teacher Shereen Douglas hosted a range of activities for St Joseph's pupils to throw themselves into.

The week involved a special assembly on sustainable travel, a spectacular 'Bling your Bike' display with children accessorising their bikes at home before showcasing their creations in the playground, and a 'Street Name Search' where pupils listed all the streets they passed on their journeys into school via bike, scooter, bus or on foot.

Councillor John McElroy, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport at Gateshead Council, said: "It's always a joy to see communities within Gateshead being recognised for their efforts to promote sustainable travel. It's particularly inspiring to see the next generation doing their bit for the planet."

Organisations from up and down the country who've been shortlisted for awards will be invited to Modeshift's prize-giving event on Thursday 23 November at York Racecourse, where the winners will be announced.
