New housing development helping regeneration of town centre

Freight Depot

As part of a broader strategy to help regenerate Gateshead town centre and its surrounding areas, our brand-new housing development on the site of the historic former Freight Depot railway sidings, is taking shape.

Delivered by the Gateshead Regeneration Partnership, with funding from the council and Homes England, the development will improve the quality and availability of housing in Gateshead. Only a 10-minute walk from the vibrant Gateshead Quays, it will feature 270 new two, three and four bedroom homes, which when completed will be available for sale, for private rent, and offered for affordable rent.

Ideal for families and first-time buyers, the homes will boast exceptional modern living, in a centrally accessible location.

Uniquely, the development also benefits from being connected to the council's District Energy Heating Network, which provides low-carbon energy to homes at prices below market rate, utilising sustainable sources.

Councillor John Adams, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "I am thrilled with the progress being made on the Freight Depot development.

"We are dedicated to building new modern and energy efficient housing in Gateshead that will not only help provide additional options for current residents, but will hopefully encourage those from outside the area to consider Gateshead an ideal place to settle and raise a family. This will in turn boost the local economy, acting as the catalyst for further investment and growth in new homes and local businesses."

The first homes are expected to be completed in early 2024.

In addition to Freight Depot, the council has committed to investing £168m in its housing service over the next five years, which is expected to deliver even more new homes across the Gateshead in the future.
