Housing service help delighted residents realise vision for communal lounge

Woodgreen

Residents at the Wood Green bungalow complex in Pelaw are praising the council's Construction Capital team, after they worked with them to realise their ambitions for their communal lounge.

Originally built in 1938, the site features 96 bungalows and is home to 130 residents, and uniquely benefits from a shared lounge that allowed those who live there to enjoy social occasions together, but in recent years it had increasingly become in need of modernisation.

The team met with the residents to understand their plans, and were only too delighted to help make their dreams a reality by completely reimagining the lounge. A new roof was fitted to improve energy efficiency, and the interior was fully refurbished, including an extension to accommodate a brand-new contemporary kitchen, new windows, a new utility room with a new boiler and communal laundry facilities, a complete rewire and decorated throughout, as well as new external security doors.

The residents of Wood Green, many of whom are elderly, were delighted with their renovated lounge, and threw a party to celebrate its opening. Lynne Walker, who has lived in the development for 47 years, said:

"I can't begin to tell you how much this means to all of us. It's especially heart-warming for me to show people around with pride. Thank you so much for including us in the process. We love it!"

Councillor John Adams, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

"As with all the larger renovation projects carried out by our repairs service, this one was selected because many of the fixtures and fittings had reached the end of their useful life and needed updating. This project has been carried out to an exceptional standard, and with future proofing in mind, I expect the new lounge with continue to be a warm and comfortable space for residents to meet and socialise for many years to come."
