International Women's Day 2024: Introducing Madison, a Data Entry Clerk apprentice within our Housing Service

For our latest story highlighting women making a difference across Gateshead, we spoke to young apprentice Madison about her experience working within our Housing service.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role.
My name is Madison, and I work in the Building Safety team at Gateshead Council as an apprentice Data Entry Clerk. My section help make sure our tenants live in safe homes, our children learn in safe schools, and that our public buildings and communal spaces are maintained to a safe standard.
On any given day the team can be repairing homes, carrying out building assessments and structural surveys, or providing fire safety advice. I'm personally responsible for tracking repairs to our fire doors and am also part of a team involved in upgrading some of our systems that will help us support more people more quickly.
It's a very varied role and it is so rewarding to feel like my work is making a real difference to the lives of others.
What is it like starting out in a male-dominated industry? Would you encourage other women to consider a career in construction?
It feels empowering as a woman to work in an arguably more male-dominated sector. I have no doubt the new skills I am learning will help me progress my career in building safety and construction.
I'm very proud of what I'm achieving with the council, and if my experience can help set a positive example to other women seeking similar opportunities, then all the better.
