370 new homes to be built in Gateshead thanks to £5.2m fund

New housing development

A much-needed investment of £5.2 million to kickstart the building of 370 new homes in Gateshead has today been given the official go-ahead.

The investment will see the former brownfield sites at Clasper Village and Chandless transformed into a range of state-of-the-art two, three and four bedroom terraced, semi-detached and detached homes, that once completed, will include a range of affordable options both for rent and sale, including the construction of new council homes.

The construction is part of a broader £12 million investment in new housing across the North East as part of the region's devolution deal.

Councillor John Adams, Cabinet Member for Housing at Gateshead Council is delighted to have the funding agreed and is eagerly anticipating the start of construction:

"This is great news for Gateshead. The approval of the funding will allow us to kickstart the regeneration of brownfield sites that previously featured outmoded housing, providing much needed new housing options to the residents of Gateshead. It will also help attract new people and businesses to the area, with millions of pounds of private investment expected to be unlocked. The new homes will be built to a very high standard and will create new communities in which I'm confident people will really want to live in.

"The ambitious new developments will also lead to the creation of many new jobs and a range of apprenticeships, meaning more opportunities for local people, and a welcome boost to the region's construction sector.

"These funds are in addition to £202 million the council will be spending on improving housing services within Gateshead over the next five, providing a clear indication of our commitment to raising the living standards of all local residents."

The funding is part of the North East's devolution deal, that will see a new combined authority formed in May covering seven council areas including Gateshead. This deal will see more funding and powers for housing and land development alongside other schemes, over the next four years. Ahead of the formation of the new authority, the current North of Tyne Combined Authority is acting as the accountable body for the new developments and has offered administrative and technical support.

Work on the sites is anticipated to start in 2025.
