The newly refurbished Pelaw Library reopened today (Monday 13 May).

Since January, council teams and contractors have been hard at work creating a modern, welcoming space for community activities and book borrowing. Crawcrook Library has also been refurbished and welcomed visitors back last month.

Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: "Both Pelaw and Crawcrook Libraries look fantastic, thanks to new lighting, internal fittings and decoration.

Our libraries service is continuing to evolve in line with the needs of our residents, so flexibility has been a key consideration throughout the refurbishments. The new and improved building interiors reflect the fact that Gateshead Libraries are community facilities where everyone's welcome, providing a wide range of accessible services and support.

Of course, we know that reading is important for health and wellbeing throughout people's lives, so providing free book borrowing and access to other reading material remains integral."

Gateshead Libraries members can borrow up to 20 books at once, as well as eBooks, eMagazines and eAudiobooks. There are no fees and a wide variety of reading materials to suit all ages and interests.

Councillor Douglas continued:

"However, you'll find much more than bookshelves at your local library. As well as free computer access and wifi, there's a varied programme of events and activities for both adults and children. There's something for everyone, whether you're interested in local or family history, getting creative, learning new skills or simply connecting with others.

The refurbishment work at Crawcrook and Pelaw libraries will ensure that both buildings can continue to be flexible, modern and comfortable spaces where people can come together and enjoy a range of facilities, activities and services that support their wellbeing."
