Introducing our new Mayor of Gateshead

We're delighted to share that Councillor Kath McCartney has been elected as Gateshead's new Mayor following today's Annual Council Meeting. She will be supported by Councillor Freda Geddes as her Deputy Mayor.
First elected as a councillor for Crawcrook and Greenside in 2012, our new Mayor has worked within the Children's Community Nursing team for 20 years and before that was a foster carer for 10 years. Councillor McCartney is also a magistrate.
Councillor McCartney has nominated NE Youth, a leading North East youth development organisation, as her chosen charity to support during her term in office.
Of her appointment, Councillor McCartney said:
It really is an honour to be elected as Mayor of Gateshead, an area where I have lived and worked all of my life. This is a continuation from my role last year as Deputy Mayor which I absolutely loved. I can't wait to meet as many people and visit as many places as possible during my term in office. I'm proud to be able to represent Gateshead and I, along with the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Freda Geddes, look forward to the forthcoming year ahead.
