Refugee Week 2024

Refugee Week begins nationally today, and we are delighted to support the events happening across the borough this week. 

Gateshead has welcomed those seeking asylum in the UK due to conflict and instability in their home countries since 2015. 

Timetable of events

Monday 17 June
  • Natural dying workshop: Comfrey Project NE8 1QB, 11am to 2.30pm.
  • BBQ party in West End Refugee Services (WERS) Garden: WERS Garden NE4 5JE, 1 to 3pm.
  • The Gateshead Millennium Bridge will be lit up in orange at 9pm to mark the start of Refugee Week.
Tuesday 18 June
  • Humanity Cartoons Exhibition: St Mary's Heritage Centre NE8 2AU, 10am to 4pm.
  • Fun food education activities: The Comfrey Project NE8 1QB, 9.30am to 2.30pm.
  • Buffet and music with Caedmon Choir: The Comfrey Project NE8 1QB, 6 to 8.30pm.
  • Gardening: Seven Bridges Cafe NE1 4BR, 1 to 3pm.
Wednesday 19 June 
  • Humanity Cartoons Exhibition: St Mary's Heritage Centre NE8 2AU, 10am to 4pm.
  • Free health checks, massage, mindfulness walks: The Comfrey Project NE8 1QB, 10.30am to 2.30pm.
  • Baltic Front Room Activities: The Baltic NE8 3BA, 10am to 6pm.
  • Recipe sharing: Seven Bridges Cafe NE1 4BR, 3 to 5pm.
Thursday 20 June
  • Voices of Homes, Women's programme: St Mary's Heritage Centre NE8 2AU,10am to 2.30pm.
  • Baltic Front Room Activities: The Baltic NE8 3BA, 10am to 6pm.
  • Family dance class: Seven Bridges Cafe NE1 4BR, 1.45 to 2.45pm. 
Friday 21 June
  • Legacy planting, shared lunch and family music session: The Comfrey Project NE8 1QB, 10.30am to 2.30pm.
  • Baltic Front Room Activities: The Baltic NE8 3BA, 10am to 6pm.
  • Music workshop:  Seven Bridges Cafe NE1 4BR, 2.30 to 3.30pm.
Saturday 22 June
  • Language games, fun and food:  Multilingual Library NE8 1EJ, 11am to 2.30pm.
  • Baltic Front Room Activities: The Baltic NE8 3BA, 10am to 6pm.
  • Family photography: The Baltic NE8 3BA, 11am to 1pm.
Sunday 23 June 
  • Baltic Front Room Activities: The Baltic NE8 3BA, 10am to 6pm.
  • Food, fun and music: The Comfrey Project NE8 1QB, 3pm to 9pm.

 

We have a dedicated Refugee and Migration Team based within the Housing Support Service.

Our Refugee Resettlement Support Workers provide a range of support to Asylum Seekers, who have received a positive decision, and been granted Refugee status, to move on from Home Office dispersed accommodation.

This includes housing, benefits, health, education and employment.
