Introduction

Gateshead Council provided its Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme to families that receive benefits-related free school meals. It was also offered to vulnerable young people identified by partners in the third sector and by local support organisations.

The HAF programme, known as Brighten the Day, took place during the Easter, Summer and Christmas school holidays.

A range of providers took part with a variety of activities available. All activities included a healthy meal.

Throughout the year, almost 8,000 individual children took part in activities filling over 30,000 individual day places. Feedback from children and young people, parents and carers was very positive.
