Building job search skills after graduation

Anthony from Wardley had recently graduated in computer science but had not been able to find work. He was demotivated and not sure what he could do. It was approaching Christmas and Anthony thought, 'A New Year a new start' so when he heard about Gateshead Go Work Live (GGWL) he got in touch. One of the GGWL key workers, Connor, picked up the call and met with Anthony.

Connor said: "Anthony clearly had ideas about what he wanted to do, ideally in the world of tech and data, but didn't know where to find the information on what was available. He had been getting some interviews but these had not worked out so we had to understand why and how to develop his job-search skills." Connor explained how GGWL could help, providing guidance on the jobs market and sessions to help with his job-search skills.

These covered areas such as:

  • completing an application
  • making your CV stand out
  • help with job interviews
  • writing a personal statement

It was clear that Anthony was getting his confidence back and their work together was showing signs of success as Anthony was regularly getting through to interviews. They looked at how he could make some small adjustments and eventually it paid off and Anthony found work!

Connor says about what GGWL can offer:

"What is key is maintaining regular contact to keep the motivation going, particularly as there are always setbacks. We can do this in a way that suits the individual in person or through voice or video call.

"What we want is to provide the support and skills people might need and give them the confidence to move on and look after themselves in their job search."

Anthony is in work and excited about the future. He has really appreciated the dedicated support he received from GGWL. He said: "I am excited to take on my new employment opportunity and I now know that I have the skills to carry it out! I've applied to the Graduate scheme now, so if I do manage to get into it, I'll be sure to schedule a meeting with you to discuss more!"
