Four Gateshead parks given the coveted Green Flag Award for the country's best parks

We're celebrating after receiving Green Flag Awards for four of our parks - Chase Park in Whickham, Derwent Walk Country Park, Felling Park and Saltwell Park.
The news that all these parks have achieved the accreditation - the international quality mark for parks and green spaces - is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that care for the green spaces, including all the volunteers and Friends groups who contribute, so that visitors and residents alike can enjoy the parks.
Saltwell Park and Chase Park have also achieved the Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management and promotion of their historic features. They are the only two parks in the whole of the North East to win this accolade.
Councillor Angela Douglas, cabinet member for culture, sport and tourism, said: "Our parks are a real source of pride in Gateshead. We are delighted to achieve the Green Flag accolade for four different parks this time - and it's a real achievement that Saltwell Park and Chase Park are the only two in the North East to win the Green Heritage Site Accreditation too.
"We know how much local residents appreciate having these lovely parks to enjoy- and we're also attracting visitors from outside Gateshead. They are vital for everyone's health and wellbeing."
Paul Todd MBE, Keep Britain Tidy's Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said: "I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Gateshead Council on achieving these Green Flag Awards.
"The parks they manage are vital green spaces for communities in Gateshead to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and they provide important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.
"We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award, everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.
"It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the Green Flag Award standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected."
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
