Get Online Week is back

Library computers (900x600)

Get Online Week (opens new window) is back for 2024 from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 October. The campaign has been held every year since 2007 and aims to boost the number of people who can use computers, smart phones, tablets and the internet - known as digital inclusion.

Not being able to get online or having the confidence to use technology to the full can have a huge impact on people's lives as the world becomes more digital. We want to help bridge the digital skills divide. That's why, beyond the work we do year-round to boost digital skills across the borough, we're using Get Online Week to host extra events for residents that could improve your IT skills as well as highlighting other initiatives you may benefit from.

Library events

Our Libraries team will be hosting dedicated activities during Get Online Week where you can chat to staff and get help with online tasks like keeping in touch with friends and family, shopping safely, computer skills and accessing free e-books.

  • Monday 14 October, 1pm to 3pm, Chopwell Library - Tech and Tea*
  • Monday 14 to Friday 18 October, 10am onwards, Blaydon, Pelaw, Birtley and Crawcrook libraries - Digital drop-ins
  • Thursday 17 October, 10am to 11am, Gateshead Central Library - Tech and Tea

*This session is being run in partnership with Digital Voice, whose digital experts will be able to provide even more advice.

Alongside these events, our libraries have a big digital offer year-round - think free wifi, free-to-use computers, coding courses, 3D printers and more.

Databank

Like a foodbank but for mobile data, the National Databank provides free mobile SIM cards for people who can't access the internet. Our libraries can distribute these free SIM cards to residents who need them.

If you think you could benefit from one, email our Libraries Digital team at digitalteamlibs@gateshead.gov.uk or telephone 0191 433 8422.

Cheaper broadband and phone packages

Cheaper broadband and phone packages, sometimes known as 'social tariffs', are available for people claiming Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits. They are delivered in the same way as regular packages, just at a lower price.
