Housing appeals

Last updated 17 December 2024

Process guide if you need to make an appeal against your homelessness decision.

Decisions you can appeal against

If one of these decisions was made and you think it's wrong, you can ask us to review it:

  • you are not eligible to join the housing register
  • you do not qualify for rehousing by Gateshead Council
  • you feel that you should have a medical priority award
  • the level of priority you have been awarded
  • the types of property you are able to use a priority award to bid for
  • your application was demoted or excluded due to housing debts
  • a decision made following a reassessment of your application, such as removal of a priority award
  • your application was cancelled
  • a decision not to reassess your application
  • a homelessness decision

What 'demotion' means

If your application has been demoted, you can bid for properties in the Home Choice scheme. But your bids will only be considered after those from applicants who are not demoted.

If you qualify for a priority award, your bids will be considered after other applicants with the same priority who are not demoted.

The notification letter, sent after assessing your application, will explain the reasons for the demotion of your application.

What 'exclusion' means

If your application is excluded from the housing register, you cannot bid for properties through the Home Choice scheme.

The notification letter sent after the assessment will list the reasons for your application's exclusion.

We promise to:

  1. Be kind and respectful to every applicant.
  2. Talk to you in a way that's easy to understand and keep you updated regularly using your preferred method of contact.
  3. Aim to finish looking at your appeal as quickly as possible.
  4. Look at everyone's situation fairly and in chronological order. Urgent priority will be given to people staying in temporary accommodation.
  5. Provide clear information about the process, possible outcomes and the next steps.
  6. Explain why we need certain information from you.
  7. Listen to your needs and make sure we help you in the best way.
  8. Notice if you might need extra help and talk to the right people about it.
  9. Offer to meet you in person, on a video call or over the phone.
  10. Ask you how we did, so we can keep getting better.
  11. Keep your information safe and private.
