Pilot scheme offers personalised support to communities in East Gateshead

Co Production Week 2024 - Stock

A pilot scheme that aims to put people at the heart of their own care is being launched in the East of Gateshead, as part of a new way of working more closely with communities to offer quality personalised support.

The vision for Gateshead is to work with communities across the borough to enable residents to live independent lives, supporting themselves and each other while access the right support when they need it.

As part of this vision, the way we and our partners deliver Adult Social Care is changing.

Since January this year, the council has partnered with the National Development Team for Inclusion's Community Led Support network, as part of a three-year change programme to support the implementation of Community Led Support across Gateshead.

Community Led Support brings together a network of public, private and voluntary organisations, who all want to improve lives in our communities. It is based on a set of principles and approaches that help people to achieve what matters most to them, supporting people to build on their own skills, assets and abilities and those of their friends and families, as well as connecting people with others in their local communities.

It is a place-based approach that recognises every community is different and there is no 'one size fits all' way to provide support and care.

To embed the new approach, the council and partners are running a pilot scheme in the East area of Gateshead running from 13 January until the end of March 2025.

The scheme aims to introduce convenient talking points into locations close to where people live and is called 'Gateshead Connects'.

People living in Pelaw, Heworth, Wardley, Leam Lane, Felling, Windy Nook and Whitehills areas will be offered the opportunity to have face-to-face discussions with services to support them to make plans that promote wellbeing and remaining independent for as long as possible.

The Gateshead Connects pilot sites in the Gateshead East area are:

  • Mondays, 10.30am to 12.30pm at Felling Family Hub, NE10 9LT
  • Tuesdays, 10.30am to 12.30pm at Edberts House, High Lanes, NE10 9AE
  • Wednesdays, 10.30am to 12.30pm at Christ Church, Felling, NE10 0HQ
  • Thursdays, 10.30am to 12.30pm at Pelaw Library, Joicey St, NE10 0QS

Councillor John Adams, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care at Gateshead Council, said:

"After almost a year of developing our Community Led Support offer for Gateshead, we're proud to be launching Gateshead Connects.

"We know that working more closely with our communities is the best way to improve care, support and advice for every individual.

"By introducing Gateshead Connects in one area at a time, we can ensure that we're co-producing the offer of support with the people living there, meaning that it's tailored to the community in a way that's never been done before.

"It's fantastic to see how the new vision is already changing the lives of people in Gateshead by helping people to have their say on how they receive support from the council and partners.

"Following the pilot, we will use the learnings to continue improving and extending the offer of Community Led Support across the borough."

Revd. Tom Worsley, Priest-in-Charge at Christ Church, said:

"We're pleased to have the opportunity to be working with Gateshead Connects.

"The offer joins our existing Wednesday Place of Welcome and Welcome Warm Space provision, where we provide free refreshments, craft activities and somewhere to sit and chat for our local communities.

"All are welcome at Christ Church, and we look forward to welcoming new faces to our community hub as part of Gateshead Connects."

Sarah Gorman, Chief Executive at Edberts House, said:

"Edberts are delighted to be partners in this new initiative that brings help and advice to people in the heart of their own communities.

"There is nothing quite like talking to someone face to face when you are struggling with something and linking up with all the local support that is available."
