Gateshead residents are being asked for their views on a memorial to remember the lives lost to Covid-19.
The global pandemic changed the lives of so many people across the world, and its impact is felt especially deeply by those who lost loved ones.
The council would like to commemorate those lives lost, recognise the sacrifices made by key workers and volunteers, and acknowledge the impact of the pandemic on its communities.
The consultation on a memorial launches ahead of the UK National Day of Reflection (9 March) which marks the fifth anniversary of the first national lockdown.
Several local authorities across the country have already provided memorials to honour the lives lost in their areas, ranging from memorial benches to public artworks.
Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism at Gateshead Council, said: "For many of us, it's hard to believe that the first Covid lockdown was announced almost five years ago. This is especially true for those who lost loved ones during such a difficult period, and for some, time has stood still since their bereavement. While society continues to move forward, it is vital that we do not forget the impact of Covid-19 on our communities, and on our frontline services which bravely did everything they could to help keep us safe. We hope a memorial will give those who have lost, those who have sacrificed, and those who are thankful for the way we supported one another throughout the pandemic a dedicated place for peaceful reflection at the heart of our communities."
To share your views on if the council should provide a Covid memorial, submit a response to the Gateshead Covid Memorial consultation by Tuesday 4 March 2025.
