Gateshead Council to continue to Brighten the Day for children in Gateshead
Gateshead Council has been awarded Government funding for a further year to provide free activities and meals for eligible children during the school holidays throughout 2025.
Funding of £800K has been secured for the year from the Department for Education's Holiday Activities and Food Programme. This will allow the council to continue to provide an extended programme of healthy food and activities during Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays throughout 2025.
Gateshead Council is planning on building on the success of the current Brighten the Day programme. The funding will allow more than 60 different organisations across the borough to provide an expected 20,000 places in 2025 for children including community groups, schools and sports clubs.
Councillor Catherine Donovan, Deputy Leader of Gateshead Council said: "We are delighted to have been awarded this funding so that we are able to continue to be part of the Government's Holiday Activities and Food Programme, which we have operated successfully in Gateshead for 7 years. We recognise how difficult it can be for struggling families to cope throughout the school holidays. Being able to extend our offer through to Christmas 2025 to allow the most vulnerable children to be able to access free activities and enjoy even more healthy and nutritious meals during the school holidays is fantastic."
During the forthcoming Easter holidays plans are in place to offer families in Gateshead, who qualify for free school meals, are vulnerable, or would benefit from attending or are referred, a range of events and activities including:
- Dance and performing arts
- Football, rugby, athletics and tennis
- Gardening, den building and bushcraft
- Outdoor fun with archery, climbing, snowtubing and orienteering
- Cooking and smoothie making
- Multisports and fun team based games
Our HAF Plus programme, designed by Gateshead teenagers specifically for Gateshead teenagers, will also offer lots of free, fun activities including ice skating, tenpin bowling, adventure golf, gaming skills, Boardgame hangout, football with NUFC Foundation and trips to the cinema. It will also give young people volunteering opportunities and the chance to enhance their skills to prepare them for further study or work.
