Decision due on the expansion of private rented housing property licensing in Gateshead

Cabinet Members will decide on the expansion of property licensing for private rented homes in parts of Gateshead, helping to make sure they are safe, warm, and well managed.
We were one of the first councils in the country to introduce selective licensing, meaning that landlords of private rented properties in defined areas of Gateshead are required to get a licence from the council before renting the property to tenants.
Since its introduction, it has helped us improve property standards in the private sector by holding landlords accountable, and enforce improvements where necessary, helping give tenants more protection.
To help increase the impact of our selective licensing, an extensive public consultation was carried out last year, where we sought the thoughts and opinions of local residents, landlords, letting agents, and business owners on proposals to expand the effective area for property licensing in Gateshead, and a series of recommendations are being considered by our Cabinet on Tuesday 18 February.
Following the outcome of this discussion, we will communicate further with residents regarding the next steps in relation to private rented property landlord licensing.
