A new sixth form building had its grand opening last week at Kingsmeadow Community School after Gateshead Council and the school worked in partnership to ensure that there are sufficient school places for the young people of west Gateshead.

The new sixth form building, which has been built on the existing school site and was jointly funded by Gateshead Council and the school, was officially opened on Monday 17 February by former pupil Riley Jones, one of the stars of hit North East crime series, Vera. Riley, who played DC Mark Edwards on the show officially opened the new building alongside Council leaders.

Councillors and governors approved plans to expand the school, off Market Lane in Gateshead, to accommodate 100 new sixth form places, due to a huge growth in sixth form students.

The school now has state-of-the-art, dedicated teaching spaces for sixth form students with their own catering facilities and a social area. The building also provides additional spaces to allow some students to have important one-to-one time with teachers and support staff.

Councillor Gary Haley, cabinet member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council, said:

"The new building will be a massive boost to current and future students, really helping them to learn and develop in their chosen subject areas and giving them the best education to help them in their future careers. The building is already making a significant impact in supporting our young people.

"We are delighted to have been able to work with Kingsmeadow Community School to make this new sixth form building a reality. I have been so impressed with the new facilities, and I am sure they will make a big difference to all the young people who attend the sixth form and the new facilities will have a positive impact in attracting future students to the sixth form for many years to come."

Mr Barrett, Kingsmeadow's Headteacher said:

"Although we are formally opening the building today, the current sixth form students have been enjoying these facilities for a number of weeks and their pride in it is tangible.

"This building helps us to continue to deliver excellent education and extra-curricular support to students in their post-16 education. It represents a significant commitment from Kingsmeadow Community School, and from Gateshead Council, in the future of the young people of west Gateshead."
