Steps to Work


Programme overview
The Steps to Work programme is designed to prepare young people to take their next steps towards independence be that onto a supported internship programme, an apprenticeship, further education or training, paid employment or volunteering in a safe and nurturing environment. Our programme is delivered from our specialist learning centre in Birtley.
Eligibility
The programme is open to young people between the ages of 16-24 who either currently have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) or have previously held one. The programme is also open to young adults (19+) who have additional needs but haven't previously had an EHCP.
Programme content
The programme has a focus on developing skills for future independence and is built around the Preparing for Adulthood outcomes which include:
- independent living
- education, employment and training
- friends, relationships and the community
- health and wellbeing
As part of the programme young people will have access to sessions which develop their skills in English, Maths and IT. There are also personal development and vocational sessions including cooking and baking, creative arts and crafts, science and technology and our 'Working in... ' sessions.
The programme is supported by our dedicated job coach who will work with our young people to identify and secure work experience placements in an area that interests the young person. This will help them to develop those important skills workplace skills.
Each class is supported by an experienced tutor and teaching assistant who have lots of experience working with young people with SEND.
Prior experience and knowledge needed
No prior experience or knowledge is needed. We will assess the needs of each young person prior to starting the programme to ensure that the programme is suitable and that we can meet the needs of the young person on the programme.
Materials and equipment
We will provide all course materials and learning resources. There may be a small charge for our cooking and baking and creative arts and crafts sessions to cover the cost of materials.
Assessment
Assessment will be ongoing throughout the year. In some classes for example in English and Maths young people may complete more formal assessments such as coursework or exams which will lead to a qualification.
