Gateshead families to benefit from funded health and wellbeing projects

SMALL GRANTS

Community organisations have received funding for health and wellbeing projects to benefit children, young people and families across Gateshead, as part of our mission to give every child the best start in life.

Grants of up to £10,000 have been awarded to 26 voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations, building on partnership working between the council and the sector to support communities across the borough.

Each funded project aims to empower children, young people and their families by teaching lasting skills while supporting mental wellbeing, ranging from creative workshops in music and art to cooking classes and peer supported sports groups.

The funding, which will be awarded to the organisations until March 2026, has been provided by Gateshead Council's Public Health team and the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) with the aim of reducing health inequalities.

Health inequalities are unfair differences in health between different groups of people. The environments we grow, live and work in play a key role in our health and wellbeing, and is impacted by factors such as income, environment and transport.

Councillor Gary Haley, cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: "We are delighted to be supporting such a wide range of initiatives across the borough and hope that many children, young people and families will benefit.

"We can only tackle the barriers to living healthy lives that families can face by working together to provide opportunities, skills and support for our communities, and this is something that our partners in the voluntary and community sector have a wealth of experience in.

"Each of the projects will make a real difference for families and we look forward to seeing them progress."

Side by Side Arts CIC is one of the organisations receiving a grant. Stuart Angus, Director, said: "I am so happy that Side by Side Arts has been awarded a grant from the Harnessing the Power of the VCSE small grant fund. This has enabled us to offer a free children's choir for anyone between ages 5 and 11. We are based in Bensham and hope that this will allow more children to access a musical activity in the local area."

The funded projects will be provided by VCSE organisations in addition to the support on offer from Gateshead Family Hubs all year round. For more information on health and wellbeing support for your family and your nearest hub, visit the page below.
