Gateshead to remember

Day of Reflection

Saltwell Park is to become the focus for Gateshead's day of reflection to mark five years since the first national lockdown.

Residents are invited to join the Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Kath McCartney, in Saltwell Park on Sunday 9 March, for the opportunity to come together to remember those who died during the pandemic and to thank those who sacrificed so much to help others.

The Mayor will plant a tree to mark the occasion at 11am and activities including pebble painting and bubbles will be available at Saltwell Towers between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Councillor Maria Hall, Cabinet Member for Communities, Volunteering and Localities, said: "Five years ago the battle against loneliness and isolation was hugely significant as the world continued to fight the Covid-19 pandemic so to be able to bring people together to remember feels very important. Everyone was affected by the pandemic however the day of reflection is particularly important for those who lost someone during this very difficult time or for those frontline workers and volunteers who sacrificed so much to help support their local communities.

"Despite the challenges we faced during the lockdowns we know of many inspiring stories so this is our chance to both remember those who died and once again thank everyone who supported others during the pandemic."

Gateshead Millennium Bridge will also be lit yellow on the same day to mark five years since the first lockdown.
