Cake decorating and sugarcraft for creative wellbeing








Programme overview
Whether you want to decorate cakes for friends and family or begin a career in cake decorating and sugarcraft, this course is for you. You will be introduced to cake decorating and sugarcraft techniques, giving you the knowledge and skills to take your cake decorating to the next level. You will make cake toppers and decorations using edible pastes including small models and a wired flower and foliage which will have a seasonal theme. The classes will provide a positive and friendly environment to meet new people and learn new skills.
Programme content
You will make four or five seasonally themed cake decorations/toppers which can be used to decorate a celebration cake. In doing so you will be introduced to the materials, tools, equipment, and techniques needed to make each decoration. You will learn how to select the most suitable paste (sugarpaste, modelling paste or flower paste) for each project. You will be taught how to use a range of cake decorating and sugarcraft tools and equipment effectively and safely, and how to adapt commonly available kitchen and craft tools. You will be taught core cake decorating and sugarcraft techniques that you will be able to use to make your own projects following the course.
Who this course is for
This course is ideal for beginners who are new cake decorating and sugarcraft. It is also suitable for those who have some basic knowledge and experience of cake decorating and sugarcraft and who would like to improve their skills and meet people who have a shared interest in cake decorating and sugarcraft. The course also welcomes learners who have completed previous cake decorating and sugarcraft courses.

Materials and equipment
Most equipment is provided but you should bring the following:
- pen
- ruler (15cm or 30cm length)
- a small box to transport your work (shoe box or smaller)
- a set of paint brushes to use with glue and dust colours - cheap children's brushes available from supermarkets are acceptable.
The following equipment is optional:
- pocket weighing scales which measure in 1g intervals
- wet wipes (for cleaning hands)
- disposable gloves
- apron
- sandwich bags
You are welcome to bring your own cake decorating and sugarcraft equipment if you prefer.
All tools required are provided for use in the classroom.
Handouts, slides and videos used in classes are available on Google Classroom.
The material cost of £24 is included in the course price.
Assessment
Your tutor will discuss your individual goals and you will be encouraged to gain new skills and techniques. You will be required to track your progress by completing an Individual Learning Plan.
