Programme overview

Research your family history using free online and physical resources, including access to Ancestry UK. Discover the amazing story of your ancestors in this relaxed and friendly course. Your tutor will help you use the most popular online resources to locate your family story. The course also looks at local and social history events that may have had an impact on the lives of your ancestors. With lots of chat and sharing of family memories this course is a perfect way to bring the past to life.

Programme content

Find out how to use census, birth, marriage and death records and more to research your family background. Discover how the social history of the time impacted on your ancestors. The tutor uses group discussions, video presentations, books and maps to make the sessions interesting and varied. There are occasional, optional visits to venues dealing with local and family history which can enhance your research. You will soon be on the way to finding out about your family through time.

Who this course is for

Anyone interested in their family story will enjoy this course. Beginners can start from scratch and those who have started their research already can develop and extend their story.

Experience and knowledge needed

Basic computer skills and an interested in social history, family history and heritage.

Materials and equipment

A notebook and pen would be useful to take notes in the lesson. You can use your own laptop, Ipad or tablet if you wish.

We provide Chromebooks, ipads, wi-fi and online subscription to Ancestry website for use in group.

Assessment

Assessment will take place through simple quizzes, group activities and informal one-to-one chats with your tutor who will provide you with guidance and support to ensure you progress and achieve your goals. You will also get written feedback on your individual learner plan and will set your own targets and write a short sentence about how your work has gone during the session each week.
