Programme overview

This course is taught by a professional artist and is aimed at developing your oil painting skills, exploring the ideas, processes, methods and techniques used by traditional artists to create their art.  The course is a mix of learning specific oil painting techniques and processes, alongside considering how art affects our creative wellbeing.  We cover a range topics including:

Programme content

New learners:

  • basic oil painting skills
  • creating an oil painting using the layered approach
  • develop further skills and understanding by developing a personalised painting project

Returning learners:

  • developing painting by tackling a landscape painting
  • developing landscape painting skills, such as painting trees, textures and so on
  • development of personal outcomes appropriate to your personal needs

Both groups of learners:

  • discuss how art helps our creative wellbeing

Who this course is for

The course is aimed at mixed ability learners. From absolute beginners to 'veterans' of other courses who feel they need to brush up on their creative skills. Anyone who struggles with mental wellbeing should also find the course beneficial to their needs. The tutor responds to the individual needs of each person (provided they keep within the structure of the programme). It is recommended that anyone new to the course does 6 weeks of basic painting skills at the start, to learn the basic principles, before moving on to a longer, more in depth personal project.

Experience and knowledge needed

None. This is a course that assumes you know nothing. It would be handy of you can draw a little, but we'll work on this. It would also be good if you have some basic IT skills (ability to open a document and type), as we'll be doing a little work on a computer, but again we can support you on this.

Materials and equipment

You will need:

  • pencils (HB or 2B)
  • A4 or A3 tracing paper
  • eraser (standard - not putty)
  • A4/A3 box/container to transport your painting in
  • painting materials will be discussed in class - we recommend starting with the following colours:
    • titanium white
    • yellow ochre
    • burnt sienna
    • raw umber
    • ultramarine
  • Paintbrushes - we recommend details ivory or profile set

We will provide:

  • practical worksheets and handouts
  • skills presentations which are emailed out to learners, so you can have your own copy
  • some reference images for you to draw from (we can't print images on an evening, so these would need to be prepared in advance)
  • basic painting materials as a backup - basic colours, some oil to clean the brushes and so on

Assessment

  • coursework
  • demonstration of knowledge
  • achievement of personal targets
  • achievement of course targets
  • portfolio of work
  • observation
