Dance and relaxation

Course hours

One session per week all year (excluding holidays). 

Programme overview

This is a course sequenced to provide a better quality of life for learners.  It will provide regular physical activity and movement which will support healthy brain function and development. Movement and dance allow for better socialising skills and support developing physical skills. 

  • we will explore balance, direction, flexibility, independent skills into movement
  • you will learn to understand the basic knowledge of how your body moves before you can carry out the activities safely
  • you will learn organisational and routine activities which students can follow in the work area
  • you will develop of interpersonal, learning, and social skills
  • you will develop drama techniques including warm up, workshop exercises, improvisation, character development, timing, ensemble working
  • you will learn about the importance of sound/silence; movement/stillness; light/lack of light
  • you will find out about dramatic phrases: on stage/off stage; cue; sequence; scene; rehearsal; enter/exit; character; individual performance /group performance
  • you will develop your skills towards  performance   
  • you will learn to identify the distinction between comedy and tragedy   
  • you will work on activities related to exploring speed and style of movement, including performing with music cues  
  • you will be able to suggest and develop ideas about your own performance   
  • you will explore, create and perform a full-scale production for the Christmas / Easter and summer events 
  • you will develop understanding and skills about working safely on staged area and off  

 Embedded throughout the course are skills:   

  • literacy and numeracy
  • communication
  • ICT

Programme content

Combining dance, music, fitness and wellbeing, this course offers plenty of opportunities for you to express yourself through dance and movement. We will also look at examples of dance from history, culture and around the world.

  • creating performances 
  • inclusive learning  
  • creating props  
  • learning relaxing techniques  

Who this course is for

This course is for SEND learners 16-25 preparing for adulthood, both new and returning learners. It is for Entry 1 learners each with their own individual needs. 

Materials and equipment

You will need: 

  • pencil case and stationery 
  • correct clothing  
  • drinks and snacks  

Assessment

You will be assessed through:

  • course work  
  • demonstration of knowledge  
  • achievement of personal goals 
  • achievement of course goals  
  • individual learning plans 
  • observation

This course is not accredited.
