Course hours

90 hours.

Programme overview

You will participate and find out about a range of sports and physical activity.

This course is sequenced to provide a better quality of life for students. This course provides learners with a broad introduction to the sports and active leisure sector, equipping learners with knowledge and skills specific to sports alongside a range of other skills. It provides an overarching picture of the body and its functions.

The course is planned this way because learners need to understand the basic knowledge of how the body works: what makes up the human body, how it moves and provides life.  You will also study how you can carry out activities safely without injury, taking into account individual needs.

  1. Enhancing Physical Health and Well-being, Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining good health, particularly for SEND learners with complex needs who may experience mobility challenges, sensory issues, or other health conditions.
  2. Developing Social and Communication Skills, Sports provide a structured and supportive environment where learners can develop essential social and communication skills.
  3. Boosting Mental Health and Emotional Well-being, Physical activity has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
  4. Encouraging Independence and Life Skills, engaging in sports supports the development of key life skills that contribute to greater independence.
  5. Providing Inclusive and Accessible Opportunities - adapted sports programs ensure that learners with complex needs can participate at their own pace and ability level. Modifications such as wheelchair sports, sensory-friendly activities, and guided exercises enable full engagement, ensuring that all learners can benefit from physical activity.
  6. Promoting Community Inclusion and Belonging, Participation in sports encourages learners to engage with their local community,
  7. Supporting Transition to Adulthood and Future Opportunities, Sports can serve as a pathway to future opportunities

Sports can play a vital role in the physical, social, and emotional development of SEND learners with complex needs. By providing accessible, inclusive, and engaging sports opportunities, we empower learners to build confidence, improve well-being, and develop essential life skills that support their transition into adulthood.

ICT, English, Maths will be in embedded in sessions throughout the course.
