Travel and tourism

Course hours

90 hours.

Programme overview

In this course, you will find out about different countries and cultures, and what it's like to travel around the world.

Travel and tourism education ensures that SEND students gain valuable skills for adult life. It supports their independence, employability, and personal development, helping them transition smoothly into adulthood with confidence and capability.  Learning travel and tourism is sequenced to help our students with special educational needs and disabilities develop essential life skills, such as planning trips, using public transport, managing money, and following schedules. These skills enhance their ability to navigate daily life and become more independent.

The travel and tourism industry offers a variety of accessible job roles, including customer service, hospitality, and tour guiding.

Learners can develop communication skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

Community Inclusion and Social Skills

Travel and tourism education encourages students to engage with their community, visit new places, and interact with different people. This helps build confidence in social situations, fostering inclusion and a sense of belonging. Functional Literacy and Numeracy

By planning itineraries, booking tickets, reading maps, and budgeting for trips, students apply literacy and numeracy in real-world contexts. This reinforces academic skills in a practical and meaningful way.

Confidence and Self-Esteem

Learning how to travel safely and explore new environments boosts students' confidence. Mastering travel-related tasks can provide a sense of achievement and motivation to take on new challenges.

Health and Wellbeing

Experiencing different travel and leisure activities promotes mental and physical well-being. Engaging in tourism-based learning encourages students to explore nature, cultural sites, and recreational activities, contributing to a more active lifestyle.

Preparation for Future Independence

For many students with SEND, transitioning to adulthood involves making decisions about travel, leisure, and potential employment. Understanding travel and tourism helps them prepare for independent living, whether for work, education, or social activities.
