Our mission is to ensure that any resident of Gateshead can get online, and every business in Gateshead has the opportunity and confidence to grow, collaborate, and innovate online.
We work with partners, other local authorities and passionate people to support:
- access to devices
- training, advice and guidance
- business growth programmes and support
- access to the internet
Our aim is to get you confident, capable and safe in a digital world, enabling you to access better learning, jobs and more.
Why being online is important
Although being online means you can access a wealth of entertainment and hobbies, it's also very useful for accessing many services that can help positively transform lives. These are services such as accessing information from your GP, looking for future employment and education, carrying out your banking and shopping, and connecting with family members, friends and potential business partners.
Online access is a tool to support you. As with any tool, we need to make sure you get the support to grow your confidence and knowledge and have the equipment you need to use it effectively.
According to the Office for National Statistics (opens new window), 8.2% (176,000) individuals have never used the internet across the north east, compared to 6.3% UK wide. In Gateshead, we also know 26% of our residents live in a low-income household, and the cost of having the internet and a device to use can be a barrier.
