Gateshead asked to #LoveWhereYouLive

Our commitment to looking after our local environment continues as we are supporting Keep Britain Tidy's Great British Spring Clean, which runs until 6 April, and is asking Gateshead residents to 'love where you live'.

We recognise the impact of clean, litter-free streets on our residents' well-being and pride in their borough. Therefore, we all have a role to play in making Gateshead cleaner, greener, and more welcoming.

Councillor John McElroy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: 'Two years ago we committed an additional £2m to our environmental services as we know how important it is to protect our local environment and ensure people can feel proud of where they live.

"This investment has been maintained and we look forward to sharing more about the teams delivering this work.

"I would encourage everyone to take part in this campaign and help do their bit to improve their local area as this will have a significant impact on our local communities.

"It's important to remember that littering and fly-tipping are illegal, unnecessary and have a cost in terms of the resources and in terms of how we feel about Gateshead. Most people help to take care of the area in which they live but we need everyone to consider the impact of their actions."

Now in its tenth year the Great British Spring Clean calls on everyone to do their bit to help their local environment by pledging to collect one bag of litter or more. Whether on your own or with family and friends, litter-picking is an easy and fun way to get active, improve your wellbeing, and take care of the environment on your doorstep.

Keep Britain Tidy reports that last year:

·        97% of participants agreed that they felt they had made a difference to their local area.

·        84% of people who took part in the Great British Spring Clean agreed that they felt more pride for their local area.

You can become a Gateshead Countryside volunteer, which is just one of the many volunteer opportunities in Gateshead.
