GO Gateshead Access card

A GO Gateshead Access card* lets you use our sports and leisure facilities at a reduced rate.

It is available to Gateshead residents and their dependents who receive any of these qualifying benefits:

  • Jobseeker's Allowance (income based)
  • Income Support
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Employment Support Allowance (income based)
  • Carer's Allowance (dependent's discount not available)
  • Incapacity Benefit (long-term rate only)
  • Universal Credit (only if total monthly income is less than any Universal Credit allowance excluding housing element. Renewable annually)
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • War Disablement Pension
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance

How much it costs

GO Gateshead Access cards cost £1. All cards must be renewed every six months.

How to apply

To obtain a GO Gateshead Access card, pick up an application form at Birtley Leisure Centre.

You'll need to bring proof of benefit when you hand in your application. If you don't have proof, you can get a 'proof of benefit' letter by contacting the benefit enquiry line on 08456 088 642.

Conditions of use

To receive stated benefits the card must be shown at time of use and the card number quoted when making telephone bookings.

The card is not transferable.

The fee paid is not refundable.

Lost/damaged or stolen cards can be replaced by paying £1.00 at Birtley Leisure Centre.

11-to-13-year-olds must complete an induction before using the gym facilities.

Facilities and activities are subject to availability, session times and opening hours.

Gateshead Council reserves the right at its discretion to withdraw a GO Gateshead Card from any person(s) who misuses the card, provides false information or who does not conform to the conditions of use.

Cardholders are subject to the general establishment rules for all leisure facilities operated by Gateshead Council.

Student members must show evidence on their first visit that they are undertaking a taught course of at least 16 hours teaching time per week.

People under 18 must have their parent/guardian's consent before they can apply for a card.

Customers may leave their card as a deposit for hired equipment. If the equipment is lost or damaged through misuse the cardholder will be liable for replacement/repair costs.

If cardholders cancel a booking, 24 hours notice of cancellation will be required or the full fee may be charged.

The benefits of the card will be withdrawn if the cardholder is in any payment default.



*GO Gateshead cards and GO Gateshead Access cards continue to be accepted and issued, but can only be used at Birtley Leisure Centre.
