Road safety improvements on Spen Lane, to and from Greenside

We call upon Gateshead Council to prioritise and implement road safety improvements on Spen Lane in Greenside, to include a reduction in the speed limit and throughput of traffic, by installing physical traffic calming measures and improving signage.

Background information

This stretch of road is dangerous, with a significant increase in traffic, due to the construction of new houses in High Spen, exacerbating the problems. There have been several 'near misses' when trying to cross the road with vehicles not slowing down on entering the village from High Spen or speeding up before they leave the village. The fact that there is a 30mph sign on entering the village and a 20mph zone does not seem to register. There is no safe place to cross the road for children going to or from school or wanting to access the Temp field or elderly or disabled people accessing the bus stop or shops. It is only a matter of time before there is a fatality on this road. I am aware of another petition, regarding road safety measures in Greenside, on the Lead Road from Woodside Lane to Folly Lane. This new petition will highlight that there are also road safety problems throughout the whole of Greenside and will strengthen the argument that it is time for some action before someone is seriously injured or worse.
